Sinus-Clearing, Soul-Warming Sriracha Soup

This isn’t really a recipe. Rather, it’s an incantation for a powerful potion that will give your stuffy sinuses a thorough airing and bring warmth to the deepest depths of your soul on those days when all your body craves is something hot, liquid, and spicy. Feel free to play around with it – change up the ingredients depending on what you have on hand, turn the heat up or down, and add any fancy fixings that you might have a liking for. The benefit of making this soup at home is that you can make it entirely your own, and that in a matter of minutes, you’ll have a healthy, nutritious meal whose every ingredient passed through your hands.

Sinus-Clearing, Soul-Warming Sriracha Soup

In a medium pot, heat a glug of olive oil. Add a handful of julienned carrots and parsley roots (from about 1 small piece of each vegetable) and leave for a few minutes to soften over medium heat. Then, add a nub of finely grated ginger, lots of sriracha, and 2 – 2.5 cups vegetable stock. Simmer for a few minutes, then plonk in a nest of egg noodles. Reduce the heat and leave for 5 minutes, until the noodles are ready. Ladle into a bowl and squeeze 1/2 lime over the soup. Garnish with scallions, basil, cilantro, and a soft-boiled egg. Slurp-up!


If you want to make things even easier for yourself, try making your own instant soup in a jar as per these recipes. (Just substitute the ingredients to include noodles, sriracha, scallions and whatnot  – I believe in you!) While I think it’s a grand idea, I’m a little dubious of making soups whose juices aren’t left to simmer all together for at least a little bit (after all, the best soups are the ones that are eaten the next day) – but we won’t know until we try!
